Sevalaya

Sevalaya works to uplift and improve the lives of the rural poor. The NGO’s vision is to serve the unprivileged and transform them for into an equitable, happy and fulfilled society with an improved quality of life. It ensures excellent education, life skills, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being of children and elders along with capability enhancement of the poor, for self-sustaining livelihood. Services including rural development, leading to creation of model villages, relief and rehabilitation in response to natural calamities are also provided.

Major Interventions:

Education:

The NGO runs Mahakavi Bharathiyar Higher Secondary School with classes from Pre-KG up to 12th grade for poor children from the villages providing free of cost quality education along with textbooks, notebooks and uniforms. Transport to and from the school is also free for primary school children. It is one of the very few schools in Tamilnadu to offer Montessori Method of education in Tamil medium. The school has well ventilated and spacious classrooms, well equipped science laboratories and a computer lab. Extracurricular activities are focused to ensure all round growth.

Courses, such as Tailoring, Nursing, Baking, Air-conditioning and Refrigeration mechanic, Lab technician, Electrician, Beautician, Computer courses, E-Publishing and Tally along with interview etiquette and functional English are offered to adults in community colleges. 25,000+ volumes of valuable books are provided at Swami Vivekananda library. It has taken up the initiative to instill the values as propounded by the three great men of our country- Bharathiyar, Gandhi and Vivekananda (BGV).

Rural Development:

Sevalaya has implemented organic farming which serves as a model for villagers and others to cultivate in tune with nature, usage of bio fertilizers are promoted for the enrichment of cow dung manure. Organic farming techniques, Agriculture/horticulture as vocational trade are also taught to the students of Agriculture group. Saplings for vegetables, flowering and some fruit trees are being grown in the Nursery.

The NGO segregates the degradable and non-degradable waste before converting the degradable waste into manure for our farms through the process of bio-composting with the latter sent out for treatment, usage of biogas is promoted instead of LPG. Solar energy has been harnessed on the campus, the Thanjavur centre is equipped with 5KW of solar energy which meets nearly 80% of its in-house power requirement RO plants and clean toilets are also installed for the benefit of the people.

Homes:

Sevalaya runs the Swami Vivekananda Boys’ Home and Mother Teresa Girls Home for orphans and poor children offers shelter, with food and education, as well as opportunities for a healthy lifestyle and all-round personality development. Experts conducts sessions to enlighten students about the opportunities and courses they could pursue. Various Old Age homes are functional offering medical, shelter and other services to destitute senior citizens to live with dignity

Sevalaya Kasuva centre is the Government nominated reception Home for the children in conflict with law, rescued from child marriage, human trafficking and other unfavourable circumstances.
